Biography

Pamela K. Levangie, PT, DPT, DSc, FAPTA, was Department Chair and Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy. She was awarded Professor Emerita status in 2017.

Dr. Levangie joined the MGH Institute July 1, 2010, as Associate Chair and full Professor of the Department of Physical Therapy. She was appointed Chair of the Physical Therapy Department in April 2012.

Prior to her position at the Institute, Dr. Levangie held long-time faculty and administrative positions at Boston University and Sacred Heart University, and most recently as a Visiting Professor in the Physical Therapy Program at Simmons College.

Dr. Levangie received her Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy from Northeastern University, her Master of Science from Boston University, her Doctor of Science in Epidemiology from Boston University’s School of Public Health, and her Doctor of Physical Therapy from the MGH Institute. She was a member of Boston University’s physical therapy faculty for 23 years and a PT faculty member at  Sacred Heart University for 13 years.

Her teaching has focused on kinesiology and research content, and she is the co-author of a widely used text entitled Joint Structure and Function: A Comprehensive Analysis, about to release its 6th edition. She has been a curriculum consultant to several physical therapy programs, and presents regionally and nationally in areas of research, and kinesiology, with a focused interest in shoulder dysfunction following treatment for breast cancer.

Dr. Levangie has held many leadership positions in the APTA, including serving as President of the Section on Research, ex officio member of the Scientific Review Committee of the Foundation for Physical Therapy, and a member of the editorial board of Physical Therapy. Dr. Levangie served on the Board of Directors of the American Council of Academic Physical Therapy (ACAPT) from 2015 through 2017.

In 2001, Dr. Levangie received the APTA’s Dorothy E. Baethke-Eleanor J. Carlin Award for Excellence in Academic Teaching; and in 2009 she was elected as a Catherine Worthingham Fellow, the highest honor among APTA’s membership categories.
